Why we built PlatyPay (and why transaction fees are history)
We are a group of students from EPFL, HSG, UniFr, and UniBe. Like most students, we spend a lot of time in cafés, kebab shops, and small restaurants. While doing so, we noticed something we couldn’t get out of our heads:
Every time we paid for our coffee by card, our favorite barista lost money.
The problem: The invisible tax: Small restaurateurs often pay between 1.5% and 3.5% in transaction fees. With the tight margins in the restaurant industry, this is a huge problem. We thought this was unfair. Why should a restaurant be penalized for accepting digital payments?
The solution: Swiss precision meets Berlin spirit We decided to use our technical know-how to change that. With the help of Monerium, Europe’s first licensed stablecoin issuer, we developed PlatyPay.
